How the Testing Was Done – Virginia Tech Methodology
At Virginia Tech, each helmet undergoes a rigorous and fully independent testing process—free from any brand influence. Their lab uses a pendulum-style impact test rig to simulate real crashes in watersports, mimicking what happens when riders hit the water, gear, or hard surfaces.
Each helmet is hit in six impact scenarios: two each on the front, side, and back. Each point is tested at two impact energy levels:
- Lower force to represent common falls in surfing, kiting, wake, foil, and kayak.
- Higher force to replicate crashes more likely to cause concussions.
During each hit, sensors measure both linear and rotational acceleration—two key metrics when it comes to head injury and brain trauma.
The helmets also meet the EN 1385:2012 standard, meaning they’re certified for use in class I–IV water conditions, from calm flatwater to aggressive whitewater.
Each impact’s concussion risk is calculated and equally weighted into an overall score—the lower the number, the better the helmet performs.
